Though Judy loves the music of the harp for its own sake, few delights compare with transmitting that music to others. With over twenty-five years of teaching experience, Judy delights in encouraging her students in making music on the harp. She has taught all ages, from four to seventy, and is always eager to meet children and adults whom she can introduce to the joys of playing the harp. Judy teaches in the greater Folsom area and in Humboldt County.
Judy holds a B.A. in Music Education and holds an Elementary Teaching Credential. She has taught through the Humboldt State University Music Academy for twenty-five years, and also has experience teaching in the Suzuki, Classical, and Celtic methods. She has taken courses in Scotland in using the Traditional Aural method of teaching.
Judy’s priority in teaching is to instill a love of music and a love of the harp, and to pass on her own love of the harp. She takes each student where they are and encourages them to find joy in the music they are capable of. Her method is “encouragement without pressure.”

We have had Judy Phillips as a harp teacher over five years. My daughter started lessons when she was in kindergarten.
Judy has been nothing but inspirational, and professional with my daughter. I am so pleased, and proud at the progress she has made working by Judy’s side.
Thank You,
Lisa

When I began harp at the age of nine I had already gone through a few instruments. Twelve years later I am still playing harp, and that might not have been the case if it wasn’t for Judy. Lessons were a highlight of my week, and I was always left excited to try out on my own what I had learned.
Judy made sure that what I was playing was both challenging and interesting for me. Her abundant kindness and warmth made working with her enjoyable, and I was never intimidated or nervous. She has been one of the leading role models in my life, always inspiring me to pursue my musical interests and passions.

“Judy is a great listener as well as a terrific teacher. I can tell her what my goals are — what I want to learn — and she really listens to that and then teaches me what I need to learn in order to achieve them. As an adult learner, this is very important to me.”

Judy Phillips has been a true blessing to our family. Our daughter began playing the harp at age six, on a whim, and then seriously fell in love with it. She took lessons from Judy for years, in fact until she left for college last year.
Judy allowed our daughter to choose music that fit her taste and then helped her to learn each piece in its entirety, until she could play it so well she did not need to look at her music. Judy gave her the skill and confidence to not only play for her own and her family’s enjoyment, but to also play with several different performance groups – from the high school orchestra to the local symphony.
Our daughter continues to play the harp in college and could not have attained the skill level she has reached without the foundational lessons she received from Judy Phillips.

Taking harp lessons form Judy Phillips has been one of the wisest investments of time and money I have made. She is a patient, focused teacher and a wonderful musician. I consider myself very fortunate to have been able to study with her. Lexy Cann, student
